As part of the Annual Seminar for Guatemalan Ambassadors, on April 5th , 44 diplomats and leaders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated in a tour of the world of sugar in the South Coast. They learned about social, work, and environmental sustainable practices and the different companies that make up the Guatemalan sugar sector. The tour was organized by ASAZGUA, the sugar producers’ association. It started at CENGICAÑA, the center for sugar cane research. Then they visited Ingenio La Unión, where they toured the living quarters at Tehuantepec Farm, where sugar cane harvesters from other parts of the country, mainly the highlands, are lodged during the harvest period – zafra -. The company provides room and board, as well as recreation and training activities during this period. They also visited the production plant, where they learned about processes and new technology used to produce sugar, as well as how electric energy is produced from sugar cane biomass. The last stop of the visit was hosted by students of Ingenio La Unión Education Center – CEDILU – who prepared a cultural show for the visitors. The children and youth explained that each of them represents a window of opportunity for Guatemala before the world, because they participate in regional and multilateral events that can be political, commercial, cultural, or educational in nature. The group of ambassadors and leaders expressed their respect and pride by naming the sugar industry as one of the best in the region, as well as a reference in terms of technology, sustainable production, and social model – all of which contributes to the country’s development.
